Our Mission:
To produce the world's finest tasting and easy-to-grow small fruit. After decades of research and discriminating selections, the scientists at Five Aces Breeding now offer consumers the most delectable and sensational strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and black raspberries. Five Aces Breeding's sister company, Ruby Mountain Nursery, will be offering several new and extraordinary strawberry varieties to be available in the 2007. Canadian and European customers will have access to the material through our cooperators at Edward Vinson and Novafruit. The raspberry varieties mentioned are available at several fine nurseries, including Stokes Raspberry Farm, Nourse Farm, Sakuma Brothers Nursery and Spooner Farms.
Products for the Aficionado: Raspberries: You will note that we recommend fall bearing types. For those aficionados who want to grow their own, we firmly believe that nothing is more weatherproof than the fall bearers. You simply plant them, cut them to the ground in the late winter or early spring and harvest the fruit. Each year trellising is reduced to that required to keep the fruit-laden canes from falling to the ground. You must have a reasonably long growing season; in the case of short growing seasons, grow the early Jaclyn. The non-fruited portion of the canes of these varieties can be overwintered, that is left on the plant, and fruited in the spring. This is no guarantee that they survive the winters where you live, but if the canes die, just remove them and you still will have a fall crop.
Strawberries: Five Aces Breeding has tamed the wild strawberry. Through generations of crossing, many dead ends and by tasting thousands of fruit, we have just now developed fertile fruit from several wild species of strawberry. This material is unique to our program and only recently been improved to the point it can be successfully grown, picked and enjoyed. Therefore, many of the selections listed have not been tested thoroughly and are only made available to small fruit aficionados. We have all in tissue culture and will make these available in small quantities in September 2007.
