Raspberries
Caroline:

Called the most intense strawberry aroma by Nourse Farms, this fall bearing red raspberry is a
rare combination of taste and productivity. Caroline fruit has also had the highest amount of many of
the beneficial fruit compounds in several tests.

In protected culture in cooler areas, Caroline has yielded 2.5 lbs of fruit per foot of row with a fruit
size of 100 berries per pound. In warmer regions, Caroline fruit is smaller and softer, about 230
berries per pound.
The fall crop ripens in August below 40N and in September in the North.

Caroline plants should only be fruited in the fall as the spring crop is small. Thus, all the above ground
plant is pruned away in March or April.  Cold hardiness is not a problem. Caroline plants are sturdy

and withstand the heat of summer, within reason, and they are moderately tolerant to heavy soils.
They do better when they are grown on raised beds to keep them out of occasional water.

Jaclyn:
This fall bearing variety is a daughter of Caroline,
having two great grandparents with
extraordinary flavor and aroma (the arctic raspberry and the woodpecker raspberry). The pedigree
existed solely to please the breeder's taste. In other words, each cross was made with the hope of
producing a variety suitable for the backyard of the breeder (and his Shredded Wheat!).  Jaclyn
indeed has many rich and pleasing aromas, but it produces fruit so early in the summer, it's usually
over 90 degrees Fahrenheit
here and the aroma is lost. When it produces in cooler weather, it rivals
Caroline in
eating pleasure. Jaclyn fruit is dark and doesn't sun scald in the high light and
temperatures. That should mean it has high amounts of beneficial compounds in its fruit, but the tests
have not been done.

Jaclyn produces about 1.5 lbs of fruit per foot of row and 100 berries make a pound in cooler weather,
but heat only reduces the size to 150 berries per pound, better than Caroline. Jaclyn is a bit more
susceptible to diseases than Caroline, but in cooler areas and in greenhouses, it rarely requires
pesticides. Jaclyn will spring crop too.

Anne:
Anne is a lemon yellow fall bearing raspberry. It is the same season as Caroline and the same large
size of Josephine. Anne fruit produce a good amount of sugar in cooler temperatures, but the aroma is
often described as being that of banana. Anne is a productive late season spring bearer like Josephine,
its sister. Per foot of row, it produces 1 lb of fruit in the fall and 1 lb in the spring.

Josephine:
   Josephine is a large fruited
, later ripening, fall fruiting type. It has very large fruit, as few as 70 are
needed to fill
a 1 lb basket. Josephine has a pleasant flavor which is less intense than Anne, Caroline or
Jaclyn, and requires cooler weather to h
ave "gourmet" class flavor. Josephine is primarily
recommended for those of you who want to grow an easy-to-care-for berry
in warmer climates.
Josephine may not have enough time to produce a crop before the first frost in the North. Josephine is
resistant to many cane, fruit and leaf insects and diseases. Josephine can be spring cropped too!
